Teacher: Is being a teacher right for you
IntroductionIf you are going to be a teacher, there are so many things to consider. Many people go into education, because they truly want to make a difference in the lives of children. Today, with all the state testing requirements, teachers are treated like cookie dough, and administrators use the same cookie cutter on all of us. There is no room for teacher individuality, no "time" to get to know the students, no input into what you will teach, when, or how---you will be given a script of exactly what to say.
Secondly, be prepares that being a teacher is viewed on negatively by society. You will hear comments like, "Anyone can be a teacher." "Teacher's are just people who weren't smart enough to get a degree in anything else." "Oh, you get to play around with kids all day" "Your job is so easy and you get all that time off".
Third, the pay is not comparable, considering what you do to what other fields get paid. Increases are negligible, and are basically controlled by the state. Be prepared to have people who are one iota away from being fired get the exact same salary as someone else who goes above and beyond, gives their heart, soul, and own money to bring the best they can to the profession. It can be demoralizing at best.
Be forewarned that if you are a "good" teacher, you will end up with the "worst" kids in your class, more students than the others have, and be expected to serve on more committees, all because your neighbor teacher "can't handle kids very well, and administration doesn't want to have them quit" Yet, keep in mind, although you are making their job easier, you will not be paid any additional money for this, given no extra compensatory time, no recognition, no additional job title you can put on the next resume, and typically not even as much acknowledgement as a thank you.
