I love it!
IntroductionIf you're looking for rolling hills, Greek life, football, and all the other traits of a traditional campus, do NOT come to NYU. However, if the idea of stepping out of your dorm and immediately being part of the greatest city on earth excites you, then NYU might be for you.
You don't really feel like a student at NYU, more like a resident of New York City. There's something very exciting about leaving your dorm and not seeing a million other college students. So I'd say if you're interested in skipping the traditional college experience and feeling like semi-independent adult in NYC, definitely consider NYU.
Campus Life and Social LifeI just finished my freshman year as a film major at NYU and I loved it. NYU has a reputation for being really large and impersonal, but in Tisch the programs and class sizes tend to be really small, so I didn't really feel that.
There really aren't a lot of parties on campus. Most dorm parties consist of about fifteen kids crammed in a room drinking or smoking pot. A typical weekend night consists of you getting together with some friends, pre-gaming, and then going out and having fun in the city. An NYU student feels less like an NYU student and more like a resident of NYC. You develop a stronger bond with this city than you do with the school. So no house parties with beer pong or anything.
Sports suck, but I hate sports so I don't care. I know very few people who actually care about sports or go to the games. There is absolutely no pressure to show school pride or support the team.
The one thing about this school that I hate (besides the high tuition and shitty financial aid) is the newspaper. Washington Sq. News is a piece of crap. It's actually embarrassing to read.

AcademicsI don't think I would go to NYU if I weren't in Stern or Tisch, simply because I could get just as good of an education at a cheaper place. I have some friends and Gallatin and it sounds like a very unique and fun experience, but I have no idea what job prospects are like after graduation.
Workload is large but manageable. It's not too difficult to balance work with fun here.
The professors in the film department ROCK. I've had some good professors outside of Tisch too, but I researched them with ratemyprofessor.com beforehand. TAs are kind of pointless and so are recitations (a smaller off-shoot of you lecture taught by TAs). Lecture is where it's at.
Student BodyNYU has a reputation for being made up of spoiled rich kids from New Jersey/Long Island, and while they definitely exist, with a student body so large there really isn't one type of student who goes here. The student body consists of people from every demographic imaginable. So while it can be obnoxious to see kids walking into your dorm with an Armani bag full of clothing purchased with Daddy's credit card, they don't represent the majority of us. I'm not rich and most of my friends aren't rich.
In Closing...There is simply no experience like living in NYC.
